Introducing: Mystique

I didn't mention anything on here about the possibility of us adopting a second cat because - quite frankly - I don't know if it would happen. It wasn't that we didn't want to adopt a second one, it was that we weren't allowed at first, and upon asking our landlords if they would reconsider, we did not know what to expect.

The whole thing came about much faster than we expected. A few weeks ago, Gilles mentioned that we should think about getting a second cat, so that Guenhwyvar had someone to keep him company while we are at work, and when we are away on weekends. I have always wanted a second cat, so I agreed wholeheartedly.

Then came our friends' wedding. When we were there I was joking with one of my friends about how Gilles decided that we needed to grow our family - just in feline form instead of human. It was a good laugh. Then the next day, she phoned me and said that her parents had a kitten that needed a home, and if it didn't find a home they would be sending it to the SPCA.

I immediately phoned our landlord and asked her permission to get a second cat, even though the rental agreement clearly stipulated ONE (1) cat. She told us that she would have to think about it. We heard back from her a week later.

After adding a few more stipulations to our rental agreement (including that we would agree to getting the furnace ducts cleaned when we moved out), the landlords agreed to let us take her in! The next day (yesterday), Mystique (Misty) joined us.

Guen did not take well her at first. He growled and hissed. Luckily he did not try to hit her or bite her, however. It took most of the evening (and some time to relax by himself), and he started to warm up. This brought him to the point he is at now - he is undecided. Sometimes he is still growling and hissing at her, especially when she tries to go in "his" areas or use "his" things. Othertimes he is happily chasing her around and being chased, and playing with her. I think this is a good sign?!

We will be keeping them separated at night and when we aren't home, until he stops showing hostility toward her, however. Hopefully that isn't for too long!

  1. Congrats on your new addition! I would love to get another one but the cat we have barely tolerates us living in the house, nevermind another cat

    1. Thanks Donna! That sounds like your cat is king of the hill!
